Parent COVID Quick Reference Guide

QVSD Athletics

COVID-19 Quick Reference Guide

The following information can be found in more detail in the QVSD Safety Plan and the QVSD Athletic Health and Safety Plan.  We follow guidance from the Allegheny County Health Department, PA Department of Health, PA Department of Education and the Centers for Disease Control along with the WPIAL and PIAA. We continue to monitor the situation on a day to day basis and will make changes to any policy or procedure that requires it based on new information or guidance.

Daily Hydration:

  1. Athletes are required to bring their own filled water bottles to practices/games.  They can refill using one of the touchless water bottle fillers or obtain an unopened water bottle from a coach to refill, if a touchless bottle filler is not available.
  2. If an athlete forgets his/her water bottle, a coach will provide an unopened plastic water bottle to use during practice.  If a touchless bottle filler is not available, a coach may provide another unopened plastic water bottle to use.

What to do if your student-athlete is sick:

  1. Do not send a sick student to school or practice!  Should you have a student-athlete who is sick at the middle school, contact the school nurse Barb Tuite (tuiteb@qvsd.org).  At the high school, contact the athletic trainer Derek Clark (clarkd@qvsd.org) or the school nurse Amanda Gilmore (gilmorea@qvsd.org).  They will help you coordinate what steps you need to take next.
  2. If your son/daughter is symptomatic for COVID-19, one of the following must occur to be cleared to return to play:
    1. Obtain a negative COVID-19 test result(antigen or PCR)
    2. A written clearance note by your son/daughter’s pediatrician or other appropriate medical professional (MD, DO, PAC, CRNP) with the student-athlete’s diagnosis other than COVID-19.
    3. Your son/daughter must quarantine for 10 days from the onset of symptoms

What to do if your student-athlete tests positive for COVID-19:

  1. Do not send your student-athlete to school or practice.  At the middle school contact the school nurse Barb Tuite (tuiteb@qvsd.org).  At the high school contact the athletic trainer Derek Clark (clarkd@qvsd.org) or the school nurse Amanda Gilmore (gilmorea@qvsd.org).  The student-athlete will be required to self-isolate for 10 days from the first onset of symptoms.
  2. According to the Allegheny County Health Department, a positive rapid antigen test will still be counted as a positive test even if the follow up PCR test comes back negative.
  3. Derek Clark will contact you to discuss the return to play process.
  4. Call your son/daughter’s pediatrician to inform them of the positive test (if they were not the ones who ordered it).  Let them know that you would like to schedule an appointment for your son/daughter for clearance back to physical activity/sport for when they are out of isolation.
  5. You will need to obtain a written clearance by your son/daughter’s pediatrician or appropriate medical professional (MD, DO, PAC, CRNP) to return to play.
  6. You will need to determine the participation level of your son/daughter in the QVSD Return to Play Following Positive COVID-19 Diagnosis Plan and sign and return the QVSD Return to Play Following Positive COVID-19 Diagnosis Waiver.

What to do if your student-athlete is determined to be a direct/close contact to a person who has tested positive for Covid-19:

  1. Do not send him/her to school or practice.  At the middle school contact the school nurse Barb Tuite (tuiteb@qvsd.org).  At the high school contact the athletic trainer Derek Clark (clarkd@qvsd.org) or the school nurse Amanda Gilmore (gilmorea@qvsd.org).
  2. Your son/daughter will need to quarantine for 14 days from their last contact with the COVID-19 positive person.
    1. Example:  Exposure date of Sunday November 1st would require the student-athlete to quarantine through Sunday November 15th.  Their first day to be able to return to play would be Monday November 16th
  3. At this time there are no protocols to test out or quarantine.  If the Allegheny County Health Department changes the length of quarantine or creates a testing protocol to leave quarantine early QVSD Athletics will update our Athletic Health and Safety plan accordingly.
  4. If the direct/close contact lives with the Covid-19 person their quarantine period will be determined on a case by case basis, because it is dependent on the isolation period of the COVID-19 positive person.

What to do if someone your student-athlete has been in direct/close contact with informs you they are going to get tested:

  1. The QVSD Athletic Department recommends that you do not send your son/daughter to a practice or game until you learn the results of that person’s test.
    1. If there is a negative test result,  the student-athlete may return to sports participation and school immediately.
    2. If there is a positive test result,  please refer to the above section “What to do if your student-athlete is determined to be a direct/close contact to a person who has tested positive for COVID-19.”
  2. This recommendation is made for the health and safety of all team members by limiting any possible future exposures to a COVID-19 positive individual.
