On Wednesday, the Quaker Valley Girls Track & Field Team traveled to Peters Township High School to compete against 3 other schools in the AA WPIAL Team Championship (Greensburg Central Catholic, Riverside, and Shenango).

The girls were led by their team effort in winning all 3 relays.  The first relay win took place during the first event of the day, the 4x800m relay, which consisted of Senior Anna Cohen, Junior Kathryn Karwoski, Sophomore Kate Hines, and Sophomore Ellie Cain.  Nearing the midpoint of the meet, the 4x100m relay consisting of Freshman Vanessa Pickett, Freshman Kwilai Karto, Sophomore Spencer Elliott, and Junior Nora Johns faced the number one ranked Greensburg Central Catholic 4x100m relay.  The Quaker Valley team was able to pull out the victory in a photo finish when anchor Nora Johns crossed the line 0.18 seconds ahead of Greensburg. In the final event on the track, the girls had another great performance when the 4x400m relay made up of Junior Kathryn Karwoski, Sophomore Kate Hines, Sophomore Ellie Cain, and Junior Nora Johns crossed the line first and officially sealed the victory for the team.  In the end, the Quakers defeated Shenango (QV 89 - S 61), Riverside (QV 85 - R 65), and Greensburg Central Catholic (QV 83 - GCC 67)!  The Girls 2022 Quaker Valley Track & Field team is now WPIAL Champions!

The relay performances alone would not have been enough for the girls to be crowned champions.  All 24 girls competing contributed towards the team's victory.  Here are some of the individual performances that led to the victory.  In addition to her 2 relay victories, Sophomore Ellie Cain won the 400m and 800m.  Freshman Cecilia Montagnese won the 1600m and 3200m.  Junior Nora Johns placed 1st in the 300 hurdles and 2nd in the 100 hurdles.  Freshman Kwilai Karto finished 2nd in the 100m, 3rd in the 400m, and 3rd in the 200m.  Sophomore Kate Hines also had a strong contribution in the 1600m, finishing 4th overall, while Freshman Vanessa Pickett placed 6th in the 100m and 5th in the 200m.

In addition to this, we had a lot of success in the field where Senior Ainsley Commens tied for 1st in Pole Vault. Junior Kathryn Karwoski placed 2nd overall in High Jump. Freshman Jay Olawaiye and Senior Ellie Bates both had personal bests in Triple Jump taking 3rd and 4th place, respectively.  Senior Amelia Herrmann finished 4th in Discus, while Freshman Sarah Minard finished 4th in Pole Vault.  Freshman Lea Mauer took 5th in Javelin.  We also had three girls place 6th overall in their respective events.  Junior Paige Nichols in Shot Put, Sophomore Spencer Elliott in Long Jump, and Sophomore Kathryn Main in High Jump.  In the end, it was a great team effort that resulted in earning the rights to be named 2022 WPIAL Champions.  Congratulations ladies!
